Background
Uzbekistan Airways, the national carrier of Uzbekistan and one of the largest airlines in Central Asia, operates a fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft on both domestic and international routes. Running global operations presents complex logistics and maintenance challenges, often requiring rapid delivery of critical spare parts. To meet these demands, the airline relies on specialized aerospace logistics providers with the global reach and technical expertise to transport high-value aircraft components wherever they are needed.
In one such case, a Uzbekistan Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner was grounded at Trabzon Airport in Turkiye due to a technical malfunction in one of its GEnx engines. Aircraft on Ground (AOG) situations have a significant operational and financial impact—leading to flight cancellations, rescheduling, and major revenue losses. In cases involving widebody aircraft, the cost of downtime can reach up to $150,000 per hour, making rapid resolution critical to minimizing disruption.
Challenge: Urgent Delivery With No Easy Route
The situation was further complicated by the lack of a direct air route between Tashkent and Trabzon, and the absence of main deck capacity for oversized cargo such as an aircraft engine. Even arranging a charter flight presented challenges—Trabzon Airport was not equipped with the necessary ground handling infrastructure to offload an engine of this size and weight. These limitations ruled out conventional air freight solutions, requiring a more creative and flexible logistics strategy to ensure the urgent delivery of the engine to the grounded aircraft.
Solution: Engine Delivered in Under 72 Hours
As soon as we received an AOG inquiry from Uzbekistan Airways, our AOG teams scrambled to find a suitable solution. While HY would have preferred air freight from Tashkent to Istanbul and then trucking to Trabzon, CargoPoint team suggested a direct charter option because a road trip of over 1000km would not be the best way to transport a sensitive aircraft engine worth millions of dollars. We chartered a B777F cargo aircraft with our strategic partner - Turkish Airlines and uplifted the engine from Tashkent to Trabzon. In Turkiye, specialist equipment was hauled all the way from Istanbul to Trabzon before the charter flight carrying the engine landed at the destination airport.
The engine was delivered to Trabzon airport safely and shortly after the arrival, the teams from Uzbekistan Airways Technics and Turkish Technic could start work on the next step - installation and testing of the engine on the grounded Boeing 787 Dreamliner. From inquiry to delivery, it took CargoPoint less than 72 hours to safely execute the entire operation.
Conclusion
This project showcases the value of working with experienced aerospace forwarders, especially knowing the risks associated with delivering high value aircraft parts over long distances at speed. Partnering with logistics specialists with vertical know-how, airlines can minimize unplanned maintenance / ground time and improve their financial performance. Delays in aviation can be costly. With CargoPoint, you get a dedicated partner focused on minimizing downtime through expert AOG logistics and seamless global delivery.
